ART2053A/ART2053B Functional Fine Art & Craft 1A

0.5 credit per semester

Students will explore a variety of traditional and contemporary materials used to create functional fine art and craft (e.g. basketry, fibers, glass, jewelry, metal, mixed media, paper, pottery, wearable art, wood). Students will examine the social significance of functional works and how artisans' design and decoration can be used to communicate narrative. By creating functional work, students will develop skills and craftsmanship through continuous practice, refinement, and reflection. This creative process encourages students to build resilience, perseverance, self-awareness, and a growth mindset. Writing, academic language, and critical thinking skills are developed through artist statements, critiques, and the close reading of artworks as text.
