Students will explore and analyze differing perceptions of functional fine art and craft (e.g. basketry, fibers, glass, jewelry, metal, mixed media, paper, pottery, wearable art, wood). Students will examine how cultural tradition and available materials influence artisans' design and decoration. By creating functional work, students will develop skills and craftsmanship through continuous practice, refinement, and reflection. This creative process encourages students to build resilience, perseverance, self-awareness, and a growth mindset. Writing, academic language, and critical thinking skills are developed through artist statements, critiques, and the close reading of artworks as text.
